Massage Therapy Program

Welcome to De Anza's Massage Therapy Program

De Anza College is the first community college in California to offer a state chancellor approved certificate and degree program in Massage Therapy. The program was founded in 1992 to instruct students in an eclectic approach to massage therapy with emphasis placed in the areas of international, sports, and deep tissue massage. The program at De Anza is based upon the medical model which requires comprehensive knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, kinesiology, proper body mechanics in addition to contraindications and business and ethics. The intent of the program is to prepare students for gainful employment in this rapidly growing field, which is quickly becoming part of the mainstream of our society, and which involves the ability to professionally interact with many different members of the healthcare community.

De Anza's mission is to offer students:

  • An affordable vocational opportunity in a multi-cultural and ethnically diverse environment.
  • A fundamental and advanced massage program preparing them for employment.
  • A community massage clinic.
  • An up-to-date and academically challenging curriculum.
  • Continuing education opportunities.
  • Professional ethics and business development training.

De Anza offers a 25.5 unit (516 hour) Certificate of Achievement, a 44.5 unit (876 hour) Certificate of Achievement Advanced, and a 52 unit Associate in Arts degree (1020 hour). The Certificate of Achievement program takes about 5 quarters to complete, and the degree take about two years to complete. Classes are offered in the fall, winter, and spring quarters, with on-campus internships available in fall, winter, spring and summer sessions.

A De Anza student who succeeds in this program will be prepared to apply to the California Massage Therapy Council for state certification, which we highly recommend. Please see their website for additional qualifications:

The projected cost for residents of California for the Certificate of Achievement is about $791 for tuition (at $31 per unit). This figure does not include books, other instructional materials, parking fees and additional quarterly campus fees. Financial aid is available for qualified students. Contact the Financial Aid Office.

De Anza College is a School member of The American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) and the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB). Graduates of the De Anza Massage Therapy Program qualify for AMTA professional membership. Our classes are approved for continuing education for nurses.
