Cathy Brown-Smith, ART
Cathy teaches the Coding and Medical Transcription courses in our department. She has had many years of coding experience in various hospitals in the Bay Area. Cathy is presently Director, Health Information Management, for a large medical clinic.
Patricia Hassel, RN, BSBA
Pat teaches the introductory courses (HTEC 50) and HTEC 60A(Medical Terminology), in addition to several of the clinical courses. She coordinates the programs and arranges all externships. Pat comes from a nursing background in both hospital and medical clinics.
Lupe Hernandez
Lupe, a graduate of De Anza College's Medical Assisting program. Lupe teaches HTEC 61 (Medical Communications), HTEC 74 (Medical Transcription) and HTEC 101C (Lab Skills for HTEC 61 and HTEC 74). Lupe is currently employed by a local medical facility performing medical financial and transcription functions.
Mary Lavin, CLS
Mary teaches HTEC 64B and HTEC 101A (Advanced phlebotomy course with the venipuncture lab). Mary is a Clincial Laboratory Scientist with many years of laboratory experience.
Berta Powers, CMA
Berta has taught administrative courses at De Anza and West Valley Colleges for over fifteen years. In addition, she is the financial manager of a busy urology office in Mountain View, California. She is a graduate of De Anza College's Medical Assisting program.
Juanita Russell, CLS
Juanita is a Clinical Laboratory Scientist who has had many years of laboratory experience.
