Graduation

Information for Graduates

Photo collage of graduates titled Graduation. The 2008 commencement ceremony will be held on Saturday, June 28, at 9 a.m. in the Outdoor Events Arena.

Award-winning author Francisco Jiménez will be the keynote speaker. Dr. Jiménez immigrated with his family to California from Tlaquepaque, Mexico, and as a child he worked in the fields of California. He is currently the Fay Boyle Professor in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures and director of the Ethnic Studies Program at Santa Clara University.

Jiménez received his B.A. from SCU and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Latin American literature from Columbia University under a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship. He has served on various professional boards and commissions, including the California Council for the Humanities, Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities (WASC), the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, Santa Clara University Board of Trustees and the Far West Lab for Educational Research and Development. He has published and edited several books on Mexican and Mexican American literature, and his stories have been published in more than 50 textbooks and anthologies of literature.

As many as 5,000 people, including family and friends of the graduates, as well as faculty and staff, have attended previous graduation ceremonies. Therefore, we suggest that guests arrive early. A reception will immediately follow the ceremony.

Please come prepared for hot weather; bring sunscreen, a hat or umbrella and water. No tickets are required and parking for this event is free.

Are you a student who is eligible to graduate this June? Make sure you fill out an Application to Graduate, which is available in the Counseling Department.

To have your name included in the graduation program, turn in the form by May 16. You may still participate in commencement activities even if you complete the application after that date. The final deadline to apply for graduation is Friday, June 27. See your counselor or academic advisor to complete an Application to Graduate.

Students completing their degree requirements in the summer may participate in the ceremony.

Caps and gowns may be purchased at the Bookstore.
