What is the De Anza Name Exploration Project?

Taking inspiration from Chairman Valentin Lopez of the Amah-Mutsun Tribal Band and the effort to change the name of Cabrillo College, the De Anza Name Exploration Project formed in early 2023 to spark a district-wide conversation about De Anza College's name and its relationship to local indigenous peoples. The California History Center has generously offered us a space to create a repository to aid members of our campus community in understanding our own relationships to indigenous peoples and the lands where our district is located. We are partnering with the CHC with the intention to be in a supportive relationship that recognizes Indigenous presence in the Bay Area and to cooperate with all Indigenous people of the Bay Area to study effects of past colonialism in the present. In this process, we will work for and respect the self determination of the local indigenous tribes.
