How to RegisterWho Should Enroll in Adapted Physical Education?Any person with a verifiable physical disability can enroll in APE classes. A physician must verify a person's diagnosis and the resulting physical limitations. The APE program is designed to provide people with disabilities the opportunity to obtain the benefits of improved physical fitness. Adapted Physical Education exists to provide a fitness experience for those whom participation in a regular Physical Education setting would be inadvisable or impossible. In most cases, with its accessible facilities, adapted equipment, affordability, appropriate assistance, and knowledgeable staff, the De Anza College APE program provides students with disabilities the least restrictive learning environment. People enrolled in the program are of all ages and backgrounds. Since the program is based upon individualized plans most classes have a wide variety of disability groups as well. It is not unusual to have a class of 20 enrolled with 10 to 15 different disabilities represented. Everyone performs his/her own program with minimal group participation. There are some classes in which students are generally enrolled based on a specific disability such as the Parkinson's class. If someone is interested in Adapted Physical Education, but isn't quite sure, we encourage visiting the program to see things first hand. Visits and tours can be arranged by contacting Jim Haynes at (408)864-8954 or e-mail - HaynesJim@fhda.edu. Registration for New and Returning StudentsDe Anza College operates on the quarter system with the start and finish of each quarter corresponding to the four seasons of the year. The fall, winter, spring quarters are twelve weeks long and the summer quarter is eight weeks. Registration usually takes place one or two months prior to the first day of the new quarter. New and returning students wishing to enroll in APE classes should follow these steps:
FEESThe APE program is very affordable. Classes are $13.00 per unit. Students also pay the $36.00 enrollment fee for fall, winter, and spring quarters ($27.50 in summer). A student may wish to purchase a parking pass for $26.65 per quarter ($20.00 in summer) unless they have a state issued 'handicapped' placard. Some students in financial need may qualify for a Board of Governors Grant Waiver (BOGW) and should contact the Financial Aid office for more information at (408) 864-8718. |
