WHO SHOULD ENROLL IN ADAPTED PHYSICAL EDUCATION?Any person with a verifiable physical disability can enroll in APE classes. Verifiable means that a physician must verify a person's diagnosis and the resulting physical limitations.
The APE program is designed to provide people with disabilities the opportunity to obtain the benefits of improved physical fitness. Adapted Physical Education exists to provide a fitness experience for those whom participation in a regular Physical Education setting would be inadvisable or impossible. In most cases, with its accessible facilities, adapted equipment, affordability, appropriate assistance, and knowledgeable staff, the De Anza College APE program provides students with disabilities the least restrictive learning environment.
People enrolled in the program are of all ages and backgrounds. Since the program is based upon individualized plans most classes have a wide variety of disability groups as well. It is not unusual to have a class of 20 enrolled with 10 to 15 different disabilities represented. Everyone performs his/her own program with minimal group participation. There are some classes in which students are generally enrolled based on a specific disability such as the cardiac program or the Parkinson's class.
If someone is interested and isn't quite sure we encourage visiting the program to see things first hand. Visits and tours can be arranged by contacting Jim Haynes by phone at (408)864-8954 or by e-mail at - haynes@fhda.edu.
