Adapted Physical Education

Adapted Physical Education (APE) is a diverse exercise program offered for college students with a verified physical disability. The APE program depends on student assistants to work with the students with disabilities in carrying out their individualized exercise program.

 

Qualifications

Student Assistant - Volunteer

Whether a person is qualified to be a volunteer is determined by Larry Bloom, Assistant Coordinator. Qualified individuals will be assigned duties under the guidance of the Assistant Coordinator and will assist physically limited students through an exercise program developed by the APE instructor. In the APE classroom the volunteer is under the supervision of the instructor. Volunteers must have a completed and signed "Volunteer of Record" form on file.

Student Assistant - Paid

Qualified individuals will be assigned duties under the guidance of the Assistant Coordinator and will assist physically limited students through an exercise program developed by the APE instructor. In the APE classroom the assistant is under the supervision of the instructor. To qualify as a paid assistant an individual must:

  • be a De Anza College student, and
  • successfully complete PEA 51 - Introduction to Assisting in Adapted Physical Education, or
  • successfully complete work or educational experience in APE or related field, or
  • be enrolled in the De Anza College Physical Therapy Assistant program (PTA).

General Student Assistant Guidelines:

Assistants have the opportunity to:

  • work 3 to 25 hours per week (work study students are limited to 20 hours per week),
  • earn unit credit,
  • earn a salary (if qualified),
  • work flexible hours on-campus according to schedule/availability,
  • earn valuable work experience,
  • apply skills acquired from class work.

Assistants are expected to:

  • treat all students with respect,
  • while working with students, keep social interaction with other assistants to a minimum,
  • keep the main focus on the student they're working with,
  • eat lunch/snacks between classes and not in front od students,
  • arrive to class on time,
  • ask questions if unsure of an exercise or situation,
  • seek direction and assitance before attempting a movement that may potentially cause injury to self or the student,
  • use proper technique at all times,wear comfortable and appropriate clothing,
  • maintain a positive attitude.

"Paid Asssistant" Schedule

Qualified assistants start at Level II, Step 1. Advancement on the salary scheduleis at the discretion of the Assistant Coordinator and the APE program.

  • Level II, Step1 - Completion of PEA 51, accepted into the PTA program, or related experience/education.
  • Level II, Step2 - six months at Level II, Step1 and 4.5 or better on last evaluation.
  • Level III, Step1 - 4.5 or better on last evaluation and paper on why you would make a good supervisor.
  • Level III, Step2 - six months at Level III, Step1 and 4.5 or better on last evaluation.

Student Assistant Responsibilities

Student assistants are responsible for:

  • assisting students with disabilities with their exercise program,
  • setting-up, taking-down exercise equipment and ensuring that equipment not in proper working order is reported,
  • properly putting away all exercise equipment before leaving the classroom,
  • notifying the instructor or staff of any problems that may arise while working with students,
  • notifying the instructor or staff of any changes in a student's condition while working in the classroom,
  • not changing or modifying a student's exercise program without prior approval of the instructor,
  • notifying the Assistant Coordinator when they have a need to leave the class early or arrive late,
  • obtaining any training materials made available by the APE program,
  • being productive and using their time wisely when their regular student is absent or finishes early,
  • not rendering assistance in a manner that may injure themselves or the student thay are working with. Always consult the APE instructor or staff,
  • notifying the Assistant Coordinator if and/or when they will be absent.

Attendance Requirements:

Assistants will be automatically terminated if they do not show up for their first assigned class of the quarter, unless prior arrangements have been made.

Assistants will be automatically terminated if they are absent more than 20% of the total hours they are assigned for the quarter unless prior arrangements are made.

Consideration for extenuating circumstances may be granted.
