A Message from your Instructor
Hello and welcome to EWRT 65/JOUR 65, the Red Wheelbarrow Spring Student Edition. My name is Ken Weisner, and I am excited to be your instructor for this course. This course provides you the great pleasures of reading and discussing the best art, poetry, fiction, drama, comic art, and creative non-fiction produced by De Anza students academic year, 2009-2010. By exam week, we will have published the 2010 Student Edition of Red Wheelbarrow, and we'll spend that evening celebrating the book and giving out prizes for the best student writing and art of the year. The annual spring Student Edition editing experience is remarkable, intense, and festive. You'll be part of a vibrant community of peers. In addition, in this course you will be receiving the very practical transfer application and resume-building experience that magazine work provides: professional level editing, proofreading, planning, production, and design skills. Those of you who are (or plan to be) writers can also get a good deal out of studying how student writers (including yourself if you choose to submit work) polish and present their work for publication. What strategies do the best writers use to submit work? Evaluation of manuscripts is all done anonymously. You'll enjoy working with other serious and enthusiastic readers to create an anthology that reflects our community's diversity, highest values, & criteria for excellence. You also get your name in lights (well, your name in the book as an editor); the opportunity to specialize in an area of your choosing (poetry, fiction, art, creative non-fiction, drama, managing, or production and design); and possibly even a chance to participate in an interview session with a well known local writer or a symposium about a particular writer.

All Red Wheelbarrow class members are asked to attend the meetings.
Those of you for whom this is a problem, please contact me by email at email@example.com to discuss your situation or see me the first day of class.
Those of you taking the 65X-64Z two unit class are required to participate in FORUMS through the catalyst course shell on a weekly basis, responding to assigned manuscripts and to each others' comments as well. Yes, you can vote online! But also be aware that face to face discussions on Monday afternoons may often lead to changes of opinion, so try not to miss live votes in the classroom either. Managing editors will update advisory vote counts in the NEWS FORUM each week after class.
Those taking the face-to-face course for one unit only (EWRT 65/JOUR 65) are also asked to engage in online discussion. Manuscripts to be read for homework will be posted each week on the catalyst site for all students in all sections of the course to read.
When you come to class, please be prepared to discuss that week's manuscripts. You can do this by either a) bringing a laptop to class with that week's material already downloaded or b) printing out the material you most want to discuss that day and bringing it along with you to class.
Red Wheelbarrow class discussions can be absolutely wonderful and the quality of those discussions is 100% correlated with the level of preparation among participating students. Let's create our own paradise by being prepared.
