New Degree Approved at the State Level

De Anza College Offers Two-Year Associate Degree in Massage Therapy

De Anza College is breaking new ground again by offering California's only community college associate degree in massage therapy. The new degree program was approved last month by the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office.

Aspiring massage therapists will take the core massage classes and a variety of electives such as "Functional Human Anatomy and Physiology," "Emergency Response," and "Tai Chi" in addition to De Anza's general education requirements to earn the degree. "A lot of students want to take the program," said instructor Jeff Forman, "but they don't realize how academically rigorous it is."

Despite the demanding schedule, "enrollment is very, very strong and there are frequently waiting lists for our classes," said Forman, who founded and coordinates the program. The new A.A. degree will require 924 to 1,132 hours of instruction and practice, and students will serve an internship under the direct supervision of instructors. Also available is the new certificate of proficiency in addition to the previously offered certificate of achievement, each requiring a set of seven to nine core classes and an internship.

De Anza will showcase its new talent beginning in January when the advanced class presents its annual student-run clinic, offering massages to the public at prices that can't be beat. Students of the college get the best deal at $5 for a 45-minute massage. The cost for staff and faculty is $10, and members of the community will still find the stress-reliever an incredible bargain at $15. The student-run clinic will operate Tuesday and Thursday mornings on an appointment basis. Call (408) 864-5645 for more information.
