De Anza College Offers a New Course and Expands Its Honors Activities

When winter quarter begins on Monday, Jan. 3, De Anza College will offer a new multimedia class and will also expand activities in its Honors Program.

The "Introduction to Multimedia" course is for people who are interested in making multimedia a career or who want to keep up with changes in their jobs. "The class will consist of a lecture as well as demonstrations of software, Web site presentations, and projects that student teams will develop. Leaders in the industry will also be invited to lecture," said instructor Dave Barney.

Special course topics will address multimedia in the world; who works in multimedia; what the hardware and software components are; the impact it will have on games, business uses, education, and the Internet; and the elements of design for effective communications.

No technical experience is needed for the multimedia class. It will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 12:10 p.m. in the Advanced Technology Center. For more information, call Barney at (408) 864-8451.

In addition, the Honors Program, an interdisciplinary learning community for students, has planned several new activities to bring its students together in various arenas involving outreach and community building.

Activities include adopting a sister school and a secondary school in order to provide ongoing mentoring; establishing a speakers series for political, literary and community activists; and participating in Earth Day activities and fundraising events. An expanded newsletter will feature more student writing, online editing, and an anthology written and edited by students and instructors from most all disciplines. Field trips will feature tours to UC Berkeley, a team-building ropes adventure, and an overnight retreat to a youth hostel.

"De Anza is a large commuter campus, but our Honors Program provides the opportunity for students to join a close community that resembles those found at small liberal arts colleges," said Tim Maxwell, part-time instructor and Honors Program advisor.
