A Total of Nine Journalism Awards
De Anza College Student Newspaper Earns Accolades

The staff at La Voz, De Anza College's student newspaper, earned nine awards at the annual Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC) conference held last month at California State University, Fresno. Some 45 community colleges from California and Arizona competed.

Among the De Anza honors were first place in sports news photo and third place in news photo, both by Nelson Ching of San Jose. Ching, editor-in-chief last fall and this winter, says, "It's good that we won these awards, especially since ours is a new program. We were starting from scratch with an inexperienced staff. For us to come together and put out an award-winning newspaper is an accomplishment! This is just a beginning."

The awards were based on La Voz issues published during 1998. Honorable mentions were presented for a news story, two editorial cartoons, front-page design, inside-page design and two "on-the-spot" entries for news photo and editorial.

JACC has served the community college journalism communities in California for nearly 40 years, and La Voz has been participating for more than 30 years.
