De Anza College to Host Community Health Fair 2000

De Anza College, in conjunction with Foothill College, will host the annual Community Health Fair on Saturday, May 13, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the De Anza campus.

Community members will have the opportunity to receive glucose and cholesterol screenings, skin fat analyses, blood pressure checks, and even have their pets examined -- all for free. The American Lung Association will display pictures of healthy lung tissue side by side with the lungs of lifelong smokers, and there will be realistic hands-on breast and testicular cancer mock-ups so visitors can feel the difference between the healthy and cancerous models.

"The fair will provide the public with an opportunity to get free screenings and receive information about courses and career development offered through the De Anza and Foothill Health Sciences Divisions," said Health Fair Coordinator Joanne Araki.

Organizations slated to participate in the fair include Good Samaritan Hospital, Planned Parenthood, the American Heart Association, the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, and the Diabetes Society, as well as other nationally-recognized health groups. Local chiropractors and acupuncturists will also be on hand to provide information about their fields.

"We're setting up a one-stop screening tent," said Melanie Norell, director of Community Relations for Good Samaritan Hospital (GSH). "People will be able to have their blood pressure and sugar levels checked to assess their risk for disease and diabetes." GSH will also test for hearing loss, osteoporosis, brake reaction times for drivers, and balance, as well as provide general health information.
