Continuing the Tradition of Award-Winning News Coverage

De Anza Student Newspaper Staff Wins Honors at Conference

The staff of La Voz, the student newspaper of De Anza College, took three awards for their work in 1999 and one award for an on-the-spot competition at the Journalism Association of Community Colleges' (JACC) conference in Fresno on April 14 and 15.

"I think we're headed in the right direction," said La Voz Editor-in-Chief Chris Pommier. "These awards give us a good idea of the values of a larger community and of other journalists as well."

Pommier took third place in an on-the-spot competition for Headline Writing, and Photo Editor Kelly Abel received a medal for her performance as part of a team competing in a game show-style quiz.

Photographer Nelson Ching won fourth place for Sports News Photo. Staff Writer Anthony Choice received an honorable mention for Informational Graphic, and Staff Writer Dean Carrico received an honorable mention for Critical Review. All winners are from San Jose.
