An Identification Card That Just Got Smart at De Anza College

A smart, highly sophisticated identification card has just arrived at De Anza College to make life (and business) more convenient for thousands of students and hundreds of employees. Only one other community college district in California (in Pasadena) has implemented the program which is also being established at De Anza's sister college, Foothill.

The colorful plastic card, which includes a photograph and signature of the user, may be used as ID at many labs and services on campus and for many other functions. For instance, the card may be used for checking out library books, attending athletic and DASB events, and making purchases at campus vending and copy machines without using cash. Soon it will also allow the user to make purchases at the Bookstore, make payments at the Admissions and Records Office, and enjoy convenient banking and phone services. A Cash-to-Chip Machine will be located at five campus sites for depositing up to $99 on the smart card.

Students may pick up their new DASB Card, now the only official student ID, in the Fireside Room of the Hinson Campus Center from April 26 to May 4. Three days after that, a permanent DASB Card Office will be operational in the lobby of the Administration Building. Additionally, a FHDA Card will be issued to all contract (or retired) faculty and staff members of the district.

"This card is intended to simplify many tasks performed at De Anza," reported Student Services Vice President Robert Griffin. "Furthermore, the card allows De Anza to accurately report weekly student contact hours when students access labs and special facilities. It also generates data that may be used as a part of the college's planning-and- resource-allocation process."

Griffin added that the uses of microprocessor technology are continuously evolving. "Foothill-De Anza has implemented this technology because it fits in with the goals of being a technology leader and allows us to enhance the quality of campus life for everyone," he added.
