Vietnamese Traditions to Be Highlighted at an Annual De Anza Event

To help celebrate Vietnamese culture and traditions, more than 1,000 members of the campus community and general public are expected to attend a special spring performance sponsored by De Anza College's Vietnamese Student Association (VSA). The colorful event Û which will take place on Saturday, April 10, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the main gym (Building PE2, Room 21) Û will include the traditional Dance of the Drums as well as the Fan Dance.

This annual event used to take place earlier in the calendar year and was called the VSA's Tet Festival performance. In past years, the event played to a full house at the Flint Center. This year the name of the celebration is "Dreams and Desires of the Young of Age" Û an approximate translation into the English language. Most presentations will be in Vietnamese although several presentations will be in English.

"We look forward to the performance which incorporates Vietnamese traditions with modern-day culture," according to Ky Duyen Le, a De Anza counselor and the club adviser. "This will be reflected in dances and songs as well as in skits and fashion shows. We've been practicing for the last two months, so expect a good performance!" Le added.

"About 400 students belong to the VSA, and more than 80 of them will perform on April 10," said Nhuy Le, VSA president. The performance is scheduled from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. and will be followed by dancing until midnight. Three disc jockeys will be featured.

Although tickets may be purchased at the door for $9, advance tickets are $7 per person. For more information, call Nhuy Le at (408) 569-5279 or coordinator Minh Lam at (408) 870-2931 or (408) 314-8485.

The VSA has been one of the most active clubs on campus in the last several years. De Anza has a large Vietnamese student population. During the last academic year, the unduplicated student headcount for Vietnamese students was more than 4,000.
