Art on Campus Dedication

De Anza College to Celebrate Artistic Achievement

Detail of Stellar Motion mobile.De Anza College will honor one of its own on Wednesday, Nov. 13, during the dedication of a kinetic sculpture by Moto Ohtake in the A-Quad on campus. Festivities surrounding "Stellar Motion" are scheduled from noon till 2 p.m. beginning with musical performances and hosted tours of newly remodeled studios for sculpture, wood shop, ceramics and painting, followed by the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Ohtake is a lab technician in the Creative Arts Division at De Anza College and resides in Santa Cruz with his family. A native of Tokyo, Japan, he graduated in 1982 from the San Francisco Art Institute with a master of fine arts degree in sculpture. During the last 20 years, he has created a body of work that includes a series of sculptures in ceramics, wood, mixed media and metal. His new kinetic work is inspired by structures found in nature.

"Stellar Motion" is one of his most complex pieces. Its gyroscopic configuration creates unpredictable responses to the wind and an infinite number of variations in its motion," said Nancy Canter, dean of Creative Arts.

A reception will follow the ceremony in the Euphrat Museum on campus. For more information, call the Creative Arts Division Office at 408-864-8832.
