For further information, contact: Janice Winkel at (408) 864-8371 Public Invited to an Evening Presentation at Borders Books Former Viet Nam Prime Minister to Speak at De Anza College on June 13Former Viet Nam Prime Minister Nguyen Cao Ky, who is well known for his efforts to support the Vietnamese society, will speak at De Anza College on Thursday, June 13, at 1:45 p.m. in Forum I. De Anza faculty are encouraged to take their classes to the event. General KY served as prime minister of South Viet Nam from 1965 to 1967. After that, he was elected vice president and served four years in that capacity. Widely known as the flamboyant vice marshal of the Vietnamese Air Force, he was one of the last and highest ranking Vietnamese to fight his way out of Vietnam at the end of the Republic in April of 1975. He was able to escape in a helicopter that landed on an American aircraft carrier. In addition to his remarks, General KY will read from his autobiography, "Buddas Child" (Copyright 2002, St. Martin's Press). Co-author Marvin Wolf will be in attendance; and his wife, Madame KY, will also meet with De Anza students on Thursday afternoon. "De Anza College is pleased to welcome Madame KY and General KY, a dynamic leader who will benefit our students with a wealth of significant historical information," said De Anza President Martha Kanter. "Our college has many long-standing relationships with the Vietnamese communities in the area. We are most fortunate to have visits from distinguished leaders such as General Ky." More than 2,000 Vietnamese American students are enrolled at De Anza out of a student population of 26,000. The Vietnamese Student Association (VSA) is the largest club on campus and recently filled Flint Center for its annual spring festival. De Anza's Learning Center is home to the DeCillis Vietnam Conflict Collection consisting of some 2,000 books, 300 videotapes and 400 magazines about Viet Nam. It is believed to be the largest collection of its kind at any community college in the United States and also encompasses a huge art and cultural exhibition. Through the Foothill-De Anza Community College's Campus Abroad Program, De Anza students and faculty have already experienced two summer study trips to Saigon and will return again in the summer of 2003 for a five-week stay. While in Viet Nam, De Anza and Foothill students study Vietnamese literature, culture and business as well as visit several cities and universities. Prime Minister KY, accompanied by his wife and the co-author of his autobiography, will also make remarks and sign copies of "Buddas Child" at Borders Books in Milpitas on June 13 at 7:30 p.m. Borders is located in the McCarthy Ranch Marketplace, 15 Ranch Drive, at the intersection of Highway 237 and McCarthy Drive near I-880. # # # EDITORS AND REPORTERS: There will be a press opportunity after General Ky's tour of the college at approximately 4:30 p.m. Contact Janice Winkel at (408) 864-8371 or e-mail winkeljanice@fhda.edu.
