For release: April 15, 2003 Wireless Mobile Classroom Finds a Home at De Anza College De Anza College has been awarded an HP Wireless Mobile Classroom by the Hewlett-Packard Company. The award is valued at approximately $102,000 and is part of HP's 2003 Community College Pre-Engineering/computer Science Grant, an initiative aimed at increasing the number of underrepresented students who pursue high-tech careers. The system is capable of turning any classroom in De Anza's Advanced Technology Center into a computer laboratory. "We're extremely pleased and excited about this gift from HP," said Letha Jeanpierre, dean of the Business/Computer Information Systems Division at De Anza. "It acknowledges the extraordinary effort De Anza places on access and success for our students. This state-of-the-art lab will provide even more opportunities for students who will eventually transfer to four-year schools majoring in computer science and engineering." The HP Wireless Mobile Classroom will bring attention to and provide support for the computer science Learning in Communities (LinC) program for students, specifically for underrepresented students. LinC places students in a series of integrated classes in computer science, English and mathematics during their first year of college. De Anza's award-winning Math Performance Success (MPS) program, whose student population is 30 percent Hispanic and 10 percent African American, will be a major participant in the project. MPS offers students a team approach to success – particularly for those who have had difficulty in math courses – through a collaboration of instructors, tutor/mentors and students. Successful completion of the MPS program gives students the courage to pursue computer science and engineering. The HP Wireless Mobile Classroom includes 35 Compaq Evo Notebook computers, an HP OfficeJet printer, an HP digital camera kit, an HP digital projector, a WIN MobiLAN ONE Motorized Wireless Computer Cart, and Discourse/ETS software and training. |
