Fall 2014 IMPACT AAPI Calendar

Join the Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund (APIASF) for an event developed to provide college planning, leadership training, financial literacy, and professional development information to students and parents.  High school students and currently enrolled college students are welcome, and there will be special breakout sessions for the parents in attendance.

The following are some classes that the IMPACT AAPI program is recommending our students take as there will be other IMPACT AAPI students in the class, and the instructors welcome a cohort of our students to work with.  You will also be able to form study groups and fellow AAPI peers to work with should you choose to take any of these classes.

Come and learn more about the APAISF AANAPISI Scholarship and eligibility requirements!  We'll provide information about the application process, requirements, and answer any questions.

Come to this workshop to get help with your APIASF AANAPISI Scholarship application and your essay questions.  You may bring your essay questions typed up for a counselor/instructor to proof-read and offer advice.

De Anza students!  Applications are due for the 2014-2015 Asian Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund's Community College Scholarship.  De Anza College will be awarding scholarships to De Anza students.  Don't miss this opportunity.  Please go to the APIASF AANAPISI Scholarship web site for additional information and eligibility criteria.

Sefa Aina will be the keynote speaker at the "Pathway to College" event, a conference for Filipino, Pacific Islander, & Southeast Asian students.  Students will participate in breakout sessions, attend a student panel, listen to motivational speakers, and be led on a campus tour.

Sefa Aina, born in Honolulu, Hawaii, is Vice Chair of the U.S. President's White House Advisory Commussion on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI), and Associate Dean and Director of the Asian American Resource Center at Pomona College.  Mr. Aina is also a founding member of Pacific Islander Education and Retention (PIER), which does tutoring and mentoring for Pacific Islander youth in the Carson, Long Beach and Inglewood areas of Los Angeles.  He is a founding member of the National Pacific Islander Educators Network and Empowering Pacific Islander Communities.  Aina was raised in San Diego and is one of nine children. He was the first of his family to attend college and complete college, graduating with a bachelor's degree in History from UCLA.

The IMPACT AAPI program celebrated the accomplishments of our DeAnza scholars who were recipients of the 2014 APIASF Scholarship.  The event took place on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 from 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm in the California History Center at DeAnza College.

  • Review the essay questions and receive personal assistance with your essay.

A New Grant Project Begins!

On October 1, we were awarded a 5-year, $2 million AANAPISI grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

Building upon the success of the previous IMPACT AAPI grant project's LinC class series, this grant's activities focus on three curricular pathways designed to help students meet transfer requirements.

Our Activities

A. New Learning Community sequences to improve transfer Pathways:

  • LinC Readiness and Success in College-Level English
  • Readiness and Success in College-Level Math and English
  • Strategies for Preparation in STEM

To support our curricular pathways:

B. Development of Digital Modules for Academic & Student Services Support

C. New In-Class Support Through Classroom Success Liaisons (CSLs)

D. Faculty/Staff Professional Development to Improve AAPI Student Success

E. Increased AAPI Resource Development Capacity
