American Mathematics Competition

The American Mathematics Competition (AMC) is the road to the United States of America Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO) and ultimately the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). The first leg of the AMC competition takes place in February of every year. All high school and junior high school students are eligible to participate. The second level of this competition is the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) which usually takes place in March. In general, the top 200-500 finishers in the combined AMC and AIME are invited to participate in the USAMO. The USAMO is typically given in late April or early May. For more information go to: American Mathematics Competition.

For many years, this part of Silicon Valley has been well represented in the USAMO and the IMO. For example, Oaz Nir, a Monta Vista High School student who took several mathematics classes at De Anza College, was a member of the USA-IMO team in the years 2000 and 2001. Over the last several years, students from Harker Academy, Saratoga High School, Cupertino High School, Lynbrook High School, and other high schools in the vicinity of De Anza College, have qualified to write the USAMO.
