Ann Leever, instructional associate
in the Distance Learning Center, with four and a half years of service

Award criteria: Her nominator reports that students, staff,
managers and faculty approach Leever regularly for assistance to solve
all kinds of problems occurring in the daily distance learning marathon,
and most of the time she presents the solution when others are still
guessing in the dark. “Ann always demonstrates professionalism
and a friendly attitude and is available to help when it matters most,”
she added.
Specifics: “I’ve learned that there is
no such thing as a typical distance learning student. Each person is
unique with his or her own set of goals, challenges and needs,”
Leever said. “They all have something in common, though. They
want to succeed and be able to move on to the next stage of their lives.”

Carleen Bruins, Web content
coordinator, with three and a half years of service

Award criteria: Bruins is responsible for keeping a
significant part of De Anza’s Web site up to date while
performing many other innovative projects. She researched various
new products for the Web, taught Web (and quilting) classes on
campus and created a crisis Web site in case of a college emergency.
Plus she’s always helpful to students and staff, according
to her nominator.
Specifics: “I like my job because it has a lot
of variety. On any given day, I may update or create new Web pages,
respond to e-mails from students, help a staff or faculty member
develop a Web site, solve technical problems or participate in
a marketing project,” Bruins said. “I feel good about
being able to provide people with the information they want —
online and face-to-face.”
