Classified Employee of the Month Winners

October

Paula Joseph, senior administrative assistant in Finance and College ServicesPaula Joseph photo

Award criteria: This award winner was nominated for the excellent job she does in assisting Donna Jones-Dulin with all the moves and changes associated with Measure E. “This is our second year of moving offices and people around due to Measure E construction and renovation,” said her nominator. “Paula approaches the employees with a calm attitude and a desire to make the process work smoothly for each of the employees affected.” Each of these moves requires a thorough plan to coordinate moving companies; employee packing responsibilities; storage requirements; ETS coordination on networks, computers and telephones; plant maintenance assistance with last minute details; new keys; and finally moving the occupants back into their space. Anyone who has moved his or her own household knows the stress this can create!

Specifics: Joseph is contributing to the success of Measure E by assisting in these critical moves. She wants to thank the Finance and College Services team for helping to make her experience at the college pleasant and rewarding.

November

Sofia Abad, OTI services coordinatorSofia Abad photo

Award criteria: According to her nominator, Abad brings creativity, sensitivity, professionalism and high standards to the CalWORKs program. “Her work with students is exceptional,” the nominator said. “Due to current budget cuts, we are very short staffed. Sofia is now covering both the Foothill and De Anza OTI/CalWORKs offices. Even with that challenge, she consistently functions at a very high level of competency, accuracy and thoroughness.” De Anza’s CalWORKs program serves the second highest number of CalWORKs students in Santa Clara County community colleges.

Specifics: “I enjoy my job because I’m able to guide and support students while they pursue training and education,” Abad said. “Of course, I wouldn’t be able to do my job so well if it wasn’t for the wonderful people I’ve had the opportunity to work with.” Last spring Tammy Marquez, a De Anza student, approached Abad about attending a conference in Washington, D.C., on welfare reauthorization. To see if they could attend, Abad contacted the conference coordinator who was able to arrange 100 percent funding for both of them. Abad and Marquez represented CalWorks students at the national conference at the end of May.

December

Francis Ramirez, office assistant in EOPSFrancis Ramirez photo

Award criteria: Ramirez is in charge of the EOPS/CARE front desk services. She simultaneously handles multiple phone lines and a horde of students with ease and grace, and always with a smile on her face. Being a former EOPS student herself, she has a true understanding of the needs of our students and often goes above and beyond to help them. She schedules counseling and academic planning appointments with a competency and flexibility that makes everyone’s job so much easier.

Specifics: Ramirez listens to each student in an efficient and caring manner. She also assists the EOPS staff and helps keep them keep organized. “Francis is like our own Radar from M*A*S*H!” said one of her colleagues. “I enjoy working with students and love to be with a great group of supportive and caring co-workers,” Ramirez added. “I’ll continue doing the best job I can to help students and staff as much as I can.”
