See schedule on last page of syllabus for tentative plan for what topics are covered in class on what dates.  This page will be expanded as the quarter progresses.

Quiz and Exam solutions will be posted in Course Studio in MyPortal under “FILES” once the quiz or exam is graded and returned to students.

EXAM 1 Thursday 10/12: covers CH R1 - R5, CH 1.1, 1.2, 1.3
This corresponds to the first 3 homework assignments and worksheets we have done so far.
You will need your calculator to do calculations.
You are permitted one 3 by 5 inch index card of notes
written in your own handwriting. 
You can write on both sides of the note card. 
You can put whatever content you want on your notecard as long as you hand write it there (not photocopy or download from somewhere).  Please respect the size requirements on the notes.

MyMathLab Homework #4 Sections 1.4 & 1.5 due next week Thursday has been opened for students to work on.

 

Week 4: 10/16-10/22

We will finish chapter 1 (1.6, 1.7, 1.8) focusing on algebraic skills finding derivatives. 

We will  start chapter 2 focusing on applications of derivatives in analyzing graphs, maximizing and minimizing functions, and on economic and business (and some other) applications of derivatives.

•These are homework problems frpm the textbook that were not included in the assigned homework for those chapter sections.
If you want extra practice and don't want to do it in MyMathLab, look at the homework problems in the textbook at the end of the chapter sections to find problems to practice. 

 

Week 5: 10/23-10/27

Quiz this week Thursday 10/26 covering sections 1.6-1.8 and 2.1 ( HW 5 & 6)
You can have a half page (5.5 by 8.5 inches) of notes, handwritten, both sides for this quiz.

We covered all of  the concepts in section 2.1 on Monday.
On Tuesday we did practice problems for section 2.1 skills to be sure we  consolidated the concepts and skills before moving on.
Answers to class practice problems

Polynomial Root Finder APP on Calculator
For the TI-83 and TI-84 calculators - finds roots of polynomials.
It takes a polynomial f(x), sets it equal to 0, and finds the values of x that make f(x)=0.
Press APP and look down the list for PLYSMLT2 or POLYSMLT - both are fine
If you need it downloaded from the instructor, see the instructor AFTER class time or during office hours.  We downloaded it in class on Tuesday to students who needed it.  I am happy to download it to your calculator but will not take any more class time to do that.

 

 Week 6: 10/30-11/3

We will have a midterm exam on Thursday 11/2
Covers sections to be covered 1.4 - 1.8 and  2.1, 2.2,  2.4, 2.5
This corresponds to homeworks #4,5,6,7.
I will extend their due dates to be due on Thursday 11/2 at Noon
They are all open now, and the due date will be checked and fixed soon, if needed.

We have skipped section 2.3 for now.
We are focusing on maximizing profit, maximizing revenue, or minimizing cost in section 2.5. 
There are many other types of applications in that section that we are not covering.

You will be permitted 1/2 page of notes, 2 sided for this exam. 
Notes must be written in your own handwriting, not printed or downloaded from other sources. 
You can have any content you want in your notes, as long as you handwrite it into your notes.



As of Tuesday this week, you are ready to begin working on the PROJECT.
The project analyzes demand, revenue, cost, and profit for a small business.
The project is DUE next week on THURS. NOV 9.

PROJECT: demand cost revenue profit is now due MONDAY 11/13.
This is an extension from the original due date of THURS 11/9.

QUIZ THURSDAY THIS WEEK - covers HW #8 & HW #9.
You are permitted one half page of handwritten notes (2 sided) for this quiz.
You need your calculator for this quiz.
Answers to quiz will be posted on Friday or Saturday in course studio, to be available when studying for the exam.  The quiz will be returned on Monday next week to provide feedback before the exam.

HW #8 and HW #9 due dates have been adjusted to be due to be 12:15 pm on the date of your quiz, Thursday.

 HW #10 will be included in next week's exam but not on this quiz.
Homework #10 is due Tuesday 11/14 at 12:15 pm before the exam.

After the quiz, Homeworks #8 and #9 will be re-opened again until Tuesday 11/14 at 12:15 pm before the exam

Homework #8 covers sections 2.5 (maximum or minimum), 2.6 (differential and linear approximation), 2.7 (elasticity of demand)

Homework #9 covers algebraic skills for derivatives of exponential and log functions. This assignment draws from various sections of Chapter 3.  It contains no applications. 

Homework #10 covers applications of exponential and log functions. This assignment draws from various Sections 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5, using our skills learned for exponential and log functions in conjunction with word problems.

You are permitted one half page of handwritten notes (2 sided) for this exam
You need your calculator for this exam.
Covers homeworks HW #8, #9, #10 with material from

from chapters 2.5, 2.6, 2.7, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5
AND ALSO covers concepts and skills practiced in the project.
The best guide to material covered is the homeworks and project.
In chapter 2.5, the exam only covers economic applications of extrema, similar to questions asked in the homework or on the project
In chapter 3.3 exponential growth,  the exam only covers unconstrained exponential growth.
It does not
cover the material on constrained growth which we did not do and is not included in the homework.

In chapter 3.5, the exam does not include the problems for annuities.

Homeworks HW#8, #9 will be reopened until the exam, to prepare for the exam.
HW#8, #9, #10 will be due before the exam on Tuesday this week.


We will start Chapter 4 this week.

In chapter 4 we start off with graphical conceptual work.
A web handout for Chapter 4 titled Notes Template for Riemann Sums is posted in Course Studio under FILES
. Print this webhandout and bring to class to take notes on the graphs.

Homework #11 has is open for sections 4.1 and 4.2.
Homework #12 is open for section 4.3
Both are due Tuesday next week before the quiz and our class time.
Quiz on Tuesday next week will be based on material covered this week in Chapter 4: 4.1, 4.2, 4.3 and practiced in HW 11 and HW12.

NOTES for the last example done in class on Friday 11/17 (change in membership on a job networking site) is posted in Files in Course Studio in MyPortal.  The file name is math12-IntegralAccumulatedChange-positvenegative.pdf
We did most of this on the graphing calculator on the projector with very little writing.  The notes are now written up.  Since typing math is difficult, please email me if you find any typographical errors in the notes that I need to correct.
I don't know why the pages appear sideways in the file.  I can't fix that right now.  If you print it out or hold your devices screen sideways, you can read it.

Instructions are here for numerical integration using fnInt on TI-83 and TI-84 calculators
We did this in class on Friday. 
We discussed that, on a quiz or exam, the definite integral questions may have one of these sets of instructions:
Evaluate the integral using antiderivatives. Show your work.
       Note: These problems are designed to see if you know this skill.
       If it say use antiderivatives,  you lose all or most credit if you use numerical integration.

OR Evaluate the integral using numerical integration.
       Note: If it tells you to use numerical integration, do that! 
       We may not know the method to find the antiderivative in our class.

       Or it may be impossible to find  a formula for the antiderivative. 
|      In these situations, we use the technology instead of antiderivatives.

OR Use either antiderivatives or numerical integration.
      Note:  If it gives you a choice, do whichever you think is faster and
                you are more likely to do correctly, for that particular problem.

Homeworks 11 and 12

On Wednesday we cover section 4.5 in class (integration using the method of substitution).

On Wednesday quiz #5  returned in class.

Homework 13 is open: sections 4.4 and 4.5
There are additional optional practices open in MyMathLab for chapter 4 - these are worth no points but allow you to do additional practice problems with feedback from MyMathLab

All previous homeworks up to #12 are now open until the final exam.
Homework #13 is due next week.  Due date will be adjusted to fit a quiz date.
Quiz date will be determined on Monday in class - it will be toward the end of the week.

No school Thurs 11/23 and 11/24: Thanksgiving holiday.

 

 

Week 10: 11/27--12/1

Quiz Thursday this week:

Except Producer and Consumer surplus (5.1) that is on HW #14 will NOT be on this quiz but WILL be on the exam next week.  So you can do the section 5.1 homework problems at the end of the assignment after the homework is re-opened after the quiz, if you do not get to it before the quiz.


Both HW13 and HW14 are due before the quiz but will be reopened after the quiz to continue to work to prepare for the exam in week 11 and the final exam in week 12.

After Thursday's Quiz, its clear we need some additional practice in financial calculations for a continuous annuity:
Link Here to an example, similar to but not the same one done in class on Monday this week.
Two Hints:  (1) NEVER use antiderivatives for finding the present value integral, in our class.  Always use numerical integration fnInt.  We don't know the method of integration needed for many of these examples to find the present value, and we don't have the judgement to know when we can or can not find the antiderivative using the methods we do know. We discussed this repeatedly in class on Monday and on the day of the quiz, and it was in quiz instructions to use fnInt. (2) Be very careful about use of parentheses in your calculator to evaluate the answer correctly.

Week 11: 12/4--12/8

ALL Homework assignments are now open until the day of the final exam, at 11:15 am.  You can use the homework to study, to continue to earn homework points.  The best 10 (out of 15 assigned) homework assignments count in your course grade.

We covered 6.1, 6.2, 6.3 this week.  Homework #15 covers 6.1, 6.2.  Section 6.3 was covered by the worksheets we did in class on Thurs 12/7.

 

Week 12: 12/11--12/15

 

FINAL EXAM WED 12/13  11:30 - 1:30 pm
NOTE EARLY START TIME
The final exam starts an hour earlier than our usual class time.

For the final exam you can have two pages, 2 sided of notes, handwitten in your handwriting.  You can not download and print out old exam solutions, class notes, or pages from the textbook or other references.  You can have any content you want in your notes, as long as you hand write it into your notes.

You need your calculator for the final exam.

 

All homework on MyMathLab is reopened to study for the final exam and it closes at 11:15 am on 12/13, 15 minutes before the final exam.  At that point, homework will NOT be reopened to earn more points after the final exam - if you need homework points to improve your grade, do it before the final exam.
