Classified Employee of the Month

Meet Marie Taylor Harper

Marie Taylor HarperMarie Taylor Harper, evening computer laboratory instructional coordinator for the Computer Information Systems department, worked 1998-2007 as a part-time instructor in the department. She made the transition from teacher to classified professional four years ago, and has been involved with both the technical and non-technical aspects of the CIS lab.

"Since I changed to my new position, I have been involved with both the technical and non-technical aspects of the CIS lab," Harper says. "On a day-to-day basis I am actively involved with CIS students either assisting them with their technical issues or tutoring them in their various programming classes. I also assist many faculty and staff who use the Business/CS Computer Labs with their technical and non-technical issues." Harper manages the MSDN-AA ELMS Software program that provides software to students enrolled in select CIS classes. In addition to these daily activities she also maintains the Business/CIS Division and Department websites, as well as designing and creating a variety of promotional materials used by the division.

"Marie made a commitment to our division to become a classified employee because she saw a need in the lab for her experience and dedication, and we have benefited from her decision in positive ways ever since," says Berta Pace, Business/CIS Division administrative assistant. "Marie has a very broad knowledge of software and hardware and is able to keep abreast of new technology, which is extremely beneficial to students and faculty alike. She has a kind, helpful demeanor with students, and they line up in front of the CIS counter for her assistance."

Pace also says Harper goes out of her way continually to help faculty across campus, with computer problems and software updates, taking her own time to help them work out problems they may not know how to solve themselves.

Harper also serves as the Club Adviser for the De Anza Association of Computing Machinery club, which is involved with promoting technology throughout the community. "I've also been the adviser for a variety of other clubs, including the De Anza Flash Club, WISES and the De Anza Programming Club," she says.

She also manages the CIS Volunteer Tutoring Program, overseeing the day-to-day operations of the program, ensuring that there are sufficient tutors in the CIS Computer Lab to assist students, and managing their training. Harper is an active member of ACE, the Classified Staff union, and is part of the ACE negotiations team.

"What I like most about my job is that I get to work with a wide variety of individuals from various cultural and educational backgrounds that is the result of De Anza college's diverse community," Harper says. "I find being involved in the success of students is a great reward especially after watching those students evolve and prosper in their own personal endeavors."
