De Anza Students Unlimited Club (DSU)

The Disabled Students Unlimited Club has been an active student club since 1981.

The club sponsors avocational activities for students with disabilities and those interested in disability issues at De Anza college, and provides opportunities for civic engagement and development of leadership skills. It is open to all De Anza students.

The club advocates for equity for those of all ages and special needs in the programs and services at De Anza College.

  • As a campus club, it meets all the necessary obligations for club standing.  Club members serve as representatives to the Inter-Club Council.

  • The club also regularly collaborates with the De Anza Outdoor Club and the Athletics Department.

  • The club has been involved in political action locally and statewide for both community college student issues and disability rights.  Members have been part of statewide student visits to the capitol in Sacramento to raise awareness of these.

  • Over the years it has often helped support De Anza's DSPS programs through assistance with activities, additional donations for special events or purchases and student scholarships. For example, it has solicited local business donations for the annual holiday party, provided extra materials and equipment for the computer lab and adapted gym, and underwritten graduation caps and gowns for students in need.

As a result of these involvements and contributions, the DSU enjoys a high profile and reputable standing in the campus community.  One of the club's faculty advisers, Tom Beggs, commented, "The club's presence in the De Anza community and throughout the state has been a force for positive change for people with disabilities."

Throughout the club's history, it has organized and sponsored numerous social and recreational events every quarter, each year, both on and off campus, for students with disabilities and their supporters and fellow students interested in disability issues.

Examples of avocational activities sponsored by the club include the following day trips:

  • sea kayaking at Elkhorn Slough
  • a barbecue event at Vasona Lake
  • field trip to Coyote Point Museum
  • an outing to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk and beaches
  • berry-picking and birding along the North Coast
  • an evening tour of the Vasona park Holiday Fantasy of LIghts

There are occasional weekend overnight trips.  The most recent included taking the San Francisco Bay ferry from Pier 39 to Marine world.

Students with disabilities and other students interested in disability issues are encouraged to participate in the club.  Club membership is open to all De Anza College students.

The Club typically meets twice monthly during the academic year.
