Welcome, everyone. This is a brief orientation for students enrolled in my online courses, aimed at pointing you in the right directions. After visiting here, you should be able access your course materials and get the contact information you need before our class starts.
ARE YOU READY FOR ONLINE LEARNING?
The online learning environment is not for everyone. Before you jump in, you may want to assess your learning style, your computer skills and your computer equipment. Most of the course materials, with the exception of your books, and all of the feedback that you will receive, will be online. If you are accustomed to face-to-face instruction, you will need to adjust to the online environment where feedback is not instantaneous. You should have a reliable internet connection and your own email account. For information about computer set up, please see the How to Get Started section below.
FACULTY CONTACT INFORMATION
The best way to reach me is by email at email@example.com. I check my email regularly, several times a day. Since I am on campus less frequently, please DO NOT attempt to contact me by phone if you need immediate help. My faculty web site contains links to my course descriptions and to the De Anza College Catalyst Web Site where your online classroom is located. If you need
help and whenever you do not understand something, please contact me and ask for help.
Be prepared to spend a minimum of 20 hours per week using and studying the course materials.
Apply for admission to De Anza College and register for this class, if you have not already done so. Completing this orientation DOES NOT enroll you in the course.
Complete the online orientation and submit the Student Information Form by the deadline date.
Read about the course at http://faculty.deanza.edu/simesalan. Be sure to review both the Course Description and Syllabus pages. Purchase the course textbooks.
This course is offered in Catalyst. Go to
https://catalyst.deanza.edu Bookmark this page, then follow the instructions logging into the class.
NOTE: You will not be able to login to Catalyst until the first day of the quarter. For late adds, it will take up to one day after you register for your account to be created.
Once you have the course textbooks, you can start your Weeks 1 and 2 readings and assignments. Be sure to complete ALL necessary first week requirements in order to maintain your standing in the course.
STUDENTS WHO WISH TO ADD:
If there is room in the course, I will distribute add codes to those students on the waiting list, in the order in which their names appear on the list. If you are not on the waiting list but still wish to add, the chances are slim, but you can email me with your request at firstname.lastname@example.org. Be sure to let me know if you are on the waiting list.
If you receive an add code, I will assume you have added the course, and you will be responsible for completing all first and second week course requirements, including all requirements in the first week. Failure to do so and/or failure to keep up during the first or second week may result in being dropped from the course.
