Welcome to LIB 53, Advanced Internet Searching Techniques

Please note: there is no on-campus orientation for this course. Read the information contained on this page, visit and review our class website, and then, unless you have questions, you may begin working on Assignment #1.

Your instructor's name is Alex Swanner (that's me!) In addition to being an instructor, I am also a librarian at De Anza College.

Are you ready to go to the next level with your internet searches? During this class we will look at the Google Advanced Search options. We will also learn about the "invisible web", which is part of the web that is not indexed by general search engines. And finally, as with all the classes I teach, we will spend some time evaluating websites and discovering who is responsible for their content.

Be prepared to spend a minimum of 1-2 hours hours per week using and studying the course materials.

Getting Started:

Make sure you have your own e-mail address and access to the Internet.

Send me a short e-mail introducing yourself. I will send a reply. That way we can test our e-mail connection.

Look around our class website. Practice using the links.

Begin working on Assignment #1.

After completing the first assignment, scroll down a bit and find the button Edit my Submission. Open this and you will see an empty white box titled, Submission Box. Write your answers in this box. You may work on this assignment until it is due. At that time, I will read your assignment and post your grade. I will also post a note with feedback for each assignment.

Use the same procedure for all four assignments and the final.
