Welcome to the CIS 18B - Advanced Unix / Linux class. My name is Clare Nguyen and I look forward to working with you this quarter.
In this class you will learn:
utilities that work extensively with text files
utilities that coordinate tasks that need to run
basic shell scripts
basic configuration and bring up of a Linux distribution
Class Prerequisites
To be successful in this class you will need:
- Access to a computer with a stable connection
- Knowledge of basic Unix / Linux commands, as covered in the CIS 18A course
- Basic programming knowledge (loop, if statement, variables, arrays), as covered in the CIS 15AG course
In addition, you will need to be present on campus 2 times this quarter: for the midterm and for the final exam.
Expected Class Work
Please plan to spend about 10 hours each week for these tasks:
- Read the class notes for the week
- Do the weekly class exercises on your own, then check your answers against the solution
- Take a weekly quiz
- Do the lab assignment for the week
Taking an online class requires more self-discipline than taking a hybrid class. It is easy to forget due dates or not keep up with the class work, so please set aside a consistent time every week to do the class work. There is no make up for the quizzes if you missed one and there is a late point penalty for late lab submission, so you can help keep your grade up - and learn the material better - if you are consistent every week.
This online section runs concurrently with the hybrid section, where students meet on campus twice a week. If you ever feel that the classroom environment will help you more than being online, you can drop by the on campus class meeting any time. No reservation required!
The on campus class meets Tues and Thurs, 11:30am - 12:45pm, in room ADM 102
Tuesdays are for class exercises, and Thursdays are for quizzes and lab questions
Be prepared to spend a minimum of 10 hours per week using and studying the course materials.
To start the class, continue with the Distance Learning orientation. On the last page, you will complete the orientation.
If you are already registered for the class, then on the first day of class log in to Catalyst to see the green sheet, the class calendar, and read the Getting Started document.
If you are on the wait list, you don't need to show up to the first day of class. I will start adding people from the wait list as seats open up after the first day.
You will get an email from me with the add code if it's your turn to add to the class.
