I am a licensed CPA in the state of California with over 20 years of industry experience in major firms such as Hewlett Packard (HP), PriceWaterhouseCoopers, and Chevron USA, specializing in cost management, financial reporting, mergers & acquisitions, and forensic accounting.
Recently, awarded two additional professional licenses and designations as CFE (Certified Fraud Examiner) from ACFE (International Association of Certified Fraud Examiners) and CFF (Certified Financial Forensics) from AICPA (American Institute of CPAs).
I have held many positions at HP including Senior Corporate Internal Auditor, Senior Financial Analyst, and Business Control Manager (Division Controller level). I also worked as a Senior Associate and a manager at PriceWaterhouseCoopers (formerly Coopers & Lybrand), one of the Big Four (Final Four for now? international accounting/consulting firms, specializing in Mergers & Acquisitions, Financial Reporting, Business Litigation and Investigation services, and Start-up and Emerging business advisory services.

Course Instructional system websites:
De Anza accounting department is using a course management system called CengageNow (textbook publisher supported system) for all sections of accounting 1A, 1B, and 1C courses. This system is rich in audio, visual presentations, online graded assignments and assessment quizzes. Unfortunately, CengageNow does not include course communication systems, such as class discussions, class announcements, student-to-student communication tools, nor topical discussion forum features.
For communications, we will use the De Anza College supported system called Catalyst. This will allow students access to the professor’s lecture notes, class notes, learning resource materials as well as participate in forums where questions/comments may be posted.
Once a student completes college course registration, the college admissions office will feed the student information into the college Catalyst course specific instructional website automatically. Please note that you will not be able to login to Catalyst until the first day of the term.
However, the publisher supported course management site, CengageNow, requires students to register at the site with their unique access code (included with a new textbook or purchased at the publisher's corporation website.
*CengageNow (http://cengagenow.com) is the Cengage publishing corporation’s own learning system. All students have to purchase a unique access code (from Cengage or from other venues like college bookstores) and use the access code to log into the specified class site (specific course key ID listed below). E-lectures, e-books, video, audio, and various types of learning aid interactive tools and study resources (in addition to e-book) are available to you 24/7 to help you learn at your own pace and work around your schedule.

Financial Accounting in 14 words:
Study of Business Events and the Effects of Economic Transactions Reported on Financial Statements.
In a general sense, accounting can be defined as an information system that provides reports to stakeholders about the economic activities and condition of a business. The subject material of this course is financial accounting which is primarily concerned with the recording and reporting of economic data and activities for a business. Although such reports provide useful information for managers, they are the primary reports for owners, creditors, governmental agencies, and the public.
The primary objective of this course is to help students learn how accounting meets the information needs of various users by developing and communicating information that is used in decision-making. Accordingly, the expected student outcome is the demonstration that the student can prepare, read, and analyze external financial statements.
Accounting is too important to managers, organizations, and societies to be left to accountants alone. Accounting information is often a basis for decisions. Accounting reports are often the basis on which the effectiveness of stewardship decisions and actions are evaluated.
Because this is an online distance learning class all work will be completed online except for a comprehensive final exam that is taken on campus.
The requirements are:
(1) Completion of exercises, problems, and chapter quizzes using the CengageNow course management system.
(note: if you had purchased a new book at de anza college bookstore, the system access code is enclosed inside of your book. Or one can purchase an access code at the CengageNow Corporate website. Once you obtain an access code, then you can log into CengageNow system homepage and enter the system assigned "Course Key" number for the right course. The system generated course key number is also stated in the course syllabus as well as this orientation page.)
(2) Completion of a comprehensive problem that will be downloaded from this site. You will bring the completed problem to the final exam.
(3) Take a comprehensive on-campus final exam covering 8 chapters (accounting 1b portion is from ch.10 through ch.17).
(4) Participation in class discussions (online) using our college supporting system called Catalyst as well as study with professor's lecture files, class notes, media-rich learning resources available 24/7 at the course Catalyst site topic by topic and week by week . (Catalyst site URL is also stated above. Upon completion of your college course registration, the college will register you into the course specific Catalyst site. No access code necessary for college controlled Catalyst site unlike CengageNow system owned by a corporation.)
These online courses cover the same material as the traditional accounting courses taught on campus. The online courses have been designed for students that are self-motivated and have good study skills and have difficulty attending classes on campus. In addition to online assignments and quizzes the online accounting students are required to take a comprehensive on-campus final exam.
In other words, both in terms of work load and work requirements, online course sections are equivalent to in-class sections of the same courses. (both in terms of content and rigor). There is no reason to expect them to be any easier or less time-consuming. For many students, the advantage of taking a distance learning course such as this one is that it allows them to fit course work into their busy schedules by working at times other than those when traditional classes are scheduled. For example, students who work during the day can do their work at night or on the weekends. However, it is important to remember that the distance learning class is not a "lite" version of the equivalent classroom sections of the course. You should expect to devote the same amount of time or more to the online format course than you would spend if you were enrolled in any other section of accounting. Be prepared to spend a minimum of 12-15 hours per week using and studying the course materials.
Course Grading Policy
See your class syllabus for the grading policy for your class.
The on-campus examination must be taken on the scheduled date or earlier if permitted. No exception to this mandatory on-campus, in-person final exam date/time.
If you decide that you need to drop the class you may use the De Anza site to drop. Remember: once you have enrolled in the class it is your responsibility to complete the course or withdraw from it.
Be prepared to spend a minimum of 15 hours per week using and studying the course materials.
