Hello and welcome to the course! I look forward to working with you this quarter as we explore various business situations that require the use of mathematics as a tool to aid in the decision-making process.
This is a very practical course. Many of the concepts we will be discussing will further develop your mathematical and analytical skills in general, and the specific applications discussed will be directly related to your personal and professional lives.
To succeed in this course, time management is of the utmost importance. Please plan to devote at least 10 - 12 hours per week to this course. In addition, for each lesson, please proceed through the specified activities in the sequence outlined. Though you are not required to complete all of the activities, I strongly encourage you to do so as they will
aid in your mastery of the concepts and your ability to make practical use of them.
I began teaching at De Anza in 1997 and am a tenured faculty member. I earned my BA from the University of California-Berkeley in Economics, and my MBA from California State University-Hayward with an emphasis in Finance, Marketing and International Business. Prior to coming to De Anza, I worked full-time in a family business in the funeral service industry. I still maintain my license as a California Funeral Director.
A final note: Any student who is having difficulty with the course is strongly encouraged to communicate with me (and the class). I welcome your questions and will do everything I can to assist you. I truly want you all to succeed. I look forward to an
exciting and challenging quarter with you!
