Engaging Literature for Level 200 & 211**
Facilitated by Jill Quigley and Kristin Skager

Location:  WRC, ATC 304

Jill and Kristin’s workshop will examine multicultural literature (including the genres of short fiction, poetry, film, drama, and novels) for EWRT, READ, and LART 200 and 211 courses to both engage students and help them understand and cultivate voice. We’ll discuss strategies for using literature as a tool for teaching writing, vocabulary, tone, and critical thinking. Participates will receive an annotated bibliography, literary analysis assignment example, and exciting classroom approaches for teaching literature.

Helping Generation 1.5 Students to be Independent Writers**

Facilitated by Judy Hubbard
Dates:   Thursday, May 5 at 12:00-1:30 and Thursday, May 19 at 12:00-1:30
Location: WRC, ATC 304

Judy’s first workshop will focus on definitions and characteristics of Generation 1.5 students and several effective ways of teaching the use of the simple present tense as an editing tool for student papers.  Her second workshop will focus on simple past and past participle errors in Gen. 1.5 student papers.  Faculty and Teaching Assistants will walk away with a clear, easy-to-apply method for handling student errors, and participants will also have copies of packets they can make available for students as references.  Participants will learn about the use of questioning, understand pared-down rules for verbs, and look at student examples.  Find out how the less you do and the more your students do is the solution for helping the student achieve independence in writing!

Teaching with Love**
Facilitated by Paula Silva
Date:  Tuesday, May 24 at 12:30-1:30
Location: WRC

Paula’s workshop will share reflections and unconventional methods from a program that incorporates what bell hooks calls "loving pedagogy." This teaching philosophy embraces students on a personal level while pushing them to experience new academic highs. Participants will leave with inspiration and ideas to experiment with as they seek new ways to interact with students in order to increase motivation and success.

"De-Colonization and Filipino Indigenous Values"
Date: Thursday, May 12th from 3:00 - 7:00 pm
Location: Hinson Campus Center, Conference Room A
RSVP: staffdevelopment@deanza.edu by Tuesday, May 10th

Through the process of learning about and experiencing decolonization through discussion and activities, participants will develop an understanding of the uniqueness of the Filipino experience in relationship to Western culture and history. Honoring International Students**
Facilitated by Christine Chai
Date: TBA, second week in June
Location: TBA

Christine’s workshop will begin with a panel of international students who discuss their experiences at De Anza College in an effort to improve our understanding of who our international students are and what particular challenges they face.  The panel will be followed by a session on best practices for acknowledging and honoring international students in English, Reading and content-areas classes.  Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of the international student populations at De Anza as well as some concrete techniques and strategies for the classroom.
