Frequently Asked Questions About Co-op
WHAT IS COOPERATIVE WORK EXPERIENCE (CO-OP) AT DE ANZA COLLEGE?
- Co-op is an academic course that utilizes students current employment as means for gaining practical training experience.
- Co-op is a letter graded course and an option for elective credits which are CSU transferable and applicable towards a De Anza College certificate or degree.
- International students may use this course as means to acquire curricular practical training, CPT.
HOW DOES THE LEARNING TAKE PLACE?
- The students’ current employment becomes the learning environment where additional or enhanced skills are acquired. This may be done as observational studies or practical training.
- Students, their supervisor, and a Co-op instructor agree on a set of learning performance objectives to be achieved/performed by the student within the current quarter.
- The objectives must be measurable and applicable to the student’s occupational or academic goal.
WHAT IS THE ENROLLMENT PROCESS?
- Ensure you have the approval or your current worksite supervisor.
- Complete a Co-op application and submit to the Co-op office. (Application may be downloaded (PDF) from the Co-op Web site, picked up at the Co-op office or at the Distance Learning office).
- Pre-registration without submitting an application does not guarantee a place in the class.
- Enrollment is limited.
WHAT IS THE ENROLLMENT PROCESS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS?
- Speak with a representative of the International Student Program to ensure eligibility and to review additional requirements.
- Find a site for employment or internship, which may be done by either going to the Career Center to research possibilities, or by calling the HR department of an organization of your choice.
- Secure a letter of acceptance for the internship or employment.
- After finalizing work assignment, the student may register for Co-op.
- Complete a Co-op application and provide a letter of acceptance no later than the first week of each quarter.

HOW MANY UNITS MAY THE STUDENT SIGN UP FOR?
- A minimum of 50 hours per quarter of paid employment or 40 hours per quarter of civic engagement allows the student to earn one unit of Co-op credit. Maximum of four units of Co-op credit may be earned per quarter.
- Students may earn from one to four units in the Occupational Parallel Program and one to three units in the General, Parallel Program. Students may sign up for only one Co-op course at a time.
- Concurrent enrollment in a minimum of 7 units is required for the parallel program. Co-op units are CSU transferable, but are not UC transferable.
- The maximum number of Co-op units students may earn is 24. Earning 24 Co-op units is in combinations with all other Co-op courses.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OCCUPATIONAL AND GENERAL?
- The parallel program includes Occupational and General Work Experience courses.
- Occupational Work Experience, Co-op 050 courses, are for students working in an environment directly related to their academic major or career goal. One to four units may be earned per quarter with a maximum of 24 units.
- General Work Experience, Co-op 070 courses, is for students who are undecided of their major or their work is not related to their academic goal. One to three units may be earned per quarter with a maximum of 9 units.
