Community and Civic Engagement Projects
Youth Leadership
The Annual De Anza Student Leadership Conference, "Youth Voices United for Change," connects high school and college students to community based youth and student organizations. The conference offers workshops on a variety of youth-identified topics such as financing your college education, community building, self-empowerment, and cultural and social activism.
Community Service Learning (CSL)
CSL is a form of experiential education in which students apply knowledge, skills, critical thinking and good judgment to address genuine community needs. CSL can be required or can be attached as additional credit in G.E. courses from all disciplines at De Anza College.
Community Scholars
A "Community Scholars in Residence" program project will bring community organizers and leaders to the campus as educators to conduct public lectures, give workshops and team-teach.
Community and Civic Engagement Certificates
The "Leadership Medallion" certificate for students, staff, and community members will be developed in coordination with Bay area colleges and universities and community organizations. The "Cultures in Communities" certificate will offer students 16 units in general education courses with an interdisciplinary concentration. The certificates will be developed and implemented between fall 2007 and winter 2009.
