Youth Voices United for Change, Annual Youth Leadership Conference

The Institute of Community and Civic Engagement will host Youth Voices United for Change, the third annual youth leadership conference at De Anza College, on Friday, Feb. 8, 2008, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The conference aims to connect high school and college students with community-based youth and student organizations. The free event will feature a wide variety of hands-on workshops, including creating media, exploring identity, impacting the community, and delivering and listening to spoken word performances, among other topics focused on self-empowerment and cultural and social activism.

Organized to empower students and youth, the day's events expose students to issues around local government, power and privilege, homophobia and media outlets, just to name a few.

Focus The Nation: Global Warming Solutions for America

De Anza College will join more than 1,450 colleges and universities in Focus the Nation, the largest teach-in in United States history, on Thursday, Jan. 31. The event will provide education on the science and politics of global warming, as well as on concrete steps everyone can take to effect change. De Anza's Focus the Nation teach-in will be held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Campus Center Conference Room A.

Events of the day will include workshops, performances and interactive panels, including a 12:30 p.m. policymakers' panel featuring De Anza President Brian Murphy with Cupertino Mayor Dolly Sandoval, among other invitees including student leaders. U.S. Rep. Mike Honda is also scheduled to have a presence on the panel.

Please bring your classes to this event. For a one-page sheet on integrating climate change into your curriculum, contact the Institute of Community and Civic Engagement at comeng@fhda.edu

Urban Arts and Hip Hop Festival

The Institute of Community and Civic Engagement will host De Anza College's first annual Urban Arts and Hip Hop Festival on Thursday, Nov. 15, from noon to 3:00 p.m. in the Main Quad.

The main purpose of the event is to bring a sense of unity to our campus and let students know how to get involved with upcoming events, including Youth Voices United for Change, De Anza's annual youth leadership conference held in February.

The ICCE-sponsored screening of "Hip Hop: Beyond Beats & Rhymes" and panel discussion last year generated a lot interaction, which made it clear that students of today have ties to the hip hop community. We would like to utilize this connection with an event geared towards the urban arts. The festival will include performances by local hip hop artists and dance teams, an art exhibition, and tables with local vendors and community organizations.

Event co-sponsors include: De Anza Institute of Community and Civic Engagement, Euphrat Museum of Art, College Outreach, Public Allies, Asian Pacific Expressions, Office of Diversity, De Anza Associated Student Body, Unity Care Hip Hop 360, Vision New America, and Silicon Valley Debug.
