English Placement Test

Test is comprised of 2 untimed multiple choice tests:  sentence skills and reading comprehension and a 30-minute timed writing sample.Students should allow a minimum of 1.5 hours to take the test.  To take a test, students must bring a photo ID and know their De Anza Student ID number (8 digits). There are no appointments. Students are seated on first come basis.  Results may take 3 or more weeks.

Who should take the English Placement Test?

All students who wish to take English courses should test unless they have:

• Completed college level English 1A or higher with a "C" grade or higher, or
• Received a qualifying score of  3 or higher on College Board AP English exams, or awarded an Associate Degree or higher in the USA.
• Students whose strongest language is not English and who have not studied 6 or more years in a school where all courses were taught in English are advised to take the ESL test.

Can course work from other colleges be used to clear English prerequisites?

Students who complete English Writing 1A or higher courses at other colleges ("C" grade or higher) can provide a copy of their official transcript to the Assessment Office for placement review. English courses below college level are not used to clear prerequisites. Students who have completed prerequisites for EWRT 1A eligibility at other colleges should take the English Placement Test for EWRT 1A eligibility at De Anza.

Foothill students who have taken English Placement test or completed English courses at Foothill ("C" grade or higher) and wish to enroll in English courses at De Anza should contact Assessment Office at 408.864.8717 before registration.

What are the re-test policies?

• English Placement test results do not expire.
• Students who wish to re-test must wait minimum 6 months from date of previous test.
• Students may not re-test to challenge a failed course.
• Students who take the English Placement test must wait for placement results before taking the ESL test.
